Mentorship Services

In order to register with the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA), engineering graduates from Tertiary Education Institutions need to gain appropriate training and experience in the work environment over a minimum period of three years. This is known as the Candidate Phase during which a Mentor can play a crucial role in guiding and assisting Candidate Technicians, Technologists, Certificated Engineers and Engineers.

The SAIEE has a number of experienced Mentors in the different sub-disciplines of Electrical Engineering, located in various parts of the country and offers a Mentorship Service covering broadly the following:

  • Guidance on ECSA’s Policy, Standards and Guides covering training and experience towards professional registration.
  • Interacting with the Employers representative on training and experience requirements and opportunities.
  • Developing of training plans focused on achieving the required outcomes and updating the plans as circumstances change.
  • Assessing the Candidates progress and providing feedback and guidance to the Candidate and Supervisor on a quarterly basis (more frequent assessments may be necessary especially in the initial stages).
  • Assisting with the writing of Training and Experience Reports (TER’s) for each period which reflect the outcomes and level of responsibility achieved.
  • Assisting with the preparation of an Engineering Report (ER) or Project Report which covers one or more projects reflecting the outcomes achieved and level of responsibility.
  • Providing guidance on the candidates Initial Development Plan (IDP) and suitable training courses.
  • Providing guidance on the profession and networking within the profession.
  • Providing guidance on completing the required documentation and applying to ECSA for registration.
  • Assisting with the presentation required by ECSA during the interview, as part of the pre-registration phase. Candidates wishing to obtain a Mentor are requested to contact the SAIEE at cpd@saiee.org.za , in order to obtain a proposal with associated costs.
